Wii Weight Loss: Can The Nintendo Console Help You Lose Weight? – Part 1
In this two part series we explore the Wii gaming console and see how it might help you lose weight.
In the first part we will focus on what the Wii console is and explain the basics of Wii. If you’re well familiar with Wii, you may want to skip to Part 2 where we look at how it can help you lose weight.
What is Wii?
Wii is a video game console (like the PlayStation or Xbox etc.) and just like them you can hook it up to your television and start playing video games.
What’s so different about Wii?![]()
The Wii Remote or Wiimote. This is the primary Wii controller and it can detect motion and rotation in 3-D. What this means is that to play a game e.g. a sword fighting game you can actually stand and simulate all the sword fighting actions.
In another example, Wii Sports, which comes with the console, you mimic the motion used in actual sports to play the game. For example if you’re boxing you would actually be punching the air like you would an opponent or with the Tennis Game, you actually swing your arm to hit the ball with the racquet.

Wii Has Great Exercise Potential:![]()
Whether Nintendo intended the exercise angle to Wii or not is debatable but the exercise consequences are obvious.
Instead of slouching on the couch while playing games you’re actively, physically involved in the game. We at Zlimmer! will always advise you to have fun in an exercise. If you’re having fun doing something - in other words if it doesn’t feel like exercise - you’re much more likely to keep doing it for the long term, so the Wii potential for exercise is great.
In Part 2 tomorrow, we get in to the specifics of how Wii can actually help you lose weight.
