Fun Exercise Ideas: Boxing
Learning to throw a proper punch and taking it out on a punching bag is not only a great stress reliever, it’s an intense workout as well. What’s more, learning to box does not require you to actually fight anyone and starting off can be as simple as trying a class in a health club or purchasing a punching bag.
Getting Started In Boxing:
The best option for boxing training are Health Clubs. There are a large number of health clubs that offer 30 minutes to 1 hour training sessions. A typical session may consist of a warm-up, followed by 3-4 minutes each of:
- Shadow Boxing
- Heavy Bags (Punching Bag)
- Jump Ropes
- Speed Bags
You’re also likely to be taught how to throw proper punches from jabs to upper-cuts.
Health Clubs are a great way to get started. The equipment would be provided by the health club and you’ll have the extra added benefit of an instructor to guide you along.
An alternative approach is to train on your own. Just get a punching bag and gloves and knock the daylights out of it! Doing this for 30 minutes everyday will give you a great workout and release a lot of daily tension.
Equipment Needed:
If you’re working out at a health club, most of the equipment (like Heavy Bags, Jump ropes) will be provided. You will need:
- A pair of good athletic shoes
- Comfortable workout clothes
- Hand Wraps
- Bag Gloves
If you’re working out alone, apart from the above equipment, get started with a Heavy Bag (Punching Bag).
Calorie Burning Potential:
1 Hour of boxing training will burn the following number of calories:
At 130 Pounds: 500 Calories
At 155 Pounds: 600 Calories
At 190 Pounds: 750 Calories
At 250 Pounds: 1000 Calories
Let’s assume it burns 700 calories at your weight. 3 Hours of weekly workouts will translate to: 700 x 3 x 50 = 105,000 Calories Burned (30 lbs, 14 kg lost) in a year.
Getting Started:
- Avoid boxing-exclusive clubs. Instead try looking for boxing workouts offered at a Health Club. The Health Club option is a much better choice for most people, especially when your goals are non-competitive boxing training focused at having a good workout.
- The workout is going to get very intense, so always start at the beginner level and get your doctor’s clearance before starting.
