Zlimmer! Snack Guide: Cookies (Biscuits)
Simple Tips To Enjoy Your Favorite Cookies While Managing Your Weight:
1. Bring Back the Milk & Cookies!
Combine your favorite cookies with a glass of skim milk and make a small meal out of it. So let’s say you’re having 10 Oreos for a snack, have 4 Oreos with a glass of milk instead.
10 Oreos = 500 Calories
4 Oreos + 1 Glass of Skim Milk = 300 Calories
Even if you don’t usually like skim milk, try it once with your favorite cookies and see if you like the combination.
2. Read The Label Carefully:
Every bag of cookies has nutritional information for a serving, however this “serving” is not a standard value and differs across (and even within) the various brands of cookies.
For example, let’s say you find the following information on 2 different brands of cookies (We’ll assume that the cookie size is about the same):
- Brand 1: Calories: 200/Serving, Serving Size: 5 Cookies
- Brand 2: Calories: 110/Serving, Serving Size: 2 Cookies
The problem is that on first glance, it seems that the Brand 2 is a much better option. But upon further inspection we can see that Brand 1 actually has 40 calories/cookie vs. 55 calories/cookie for Brand 2. This is actually a very common problem and we strongly recommend looking at the serving size carefully to get the right information about calories/cookie.
Zlimmer! Tip: Your calorie number for 1 Cookie should be between 40-70 Calories.
3. Try a 100-Calorie Snack Pack:
As we just mentioned, figuring out the total of calories in a cookie may need some work. One way to go around this problem is to try a 100-calorie snack pack. The best part about these snack packs is that you know exactly how much you’re eating - 100 calories per pack. Read our 100-Calorie Snack Pack review to learn about the pros and cons of snack packs in weight management.
4. With Cookies, Fat-Free Means Nothing:
When it comes to the total number of calories in a cookie, the fat-free or low-fat options don’t help much. For example:
Regular Oreo: 55 Calories/Cookie
Oreo Reduced-Fat: 50 Calories/Cookie
What adds to the problem is that just by buying a fat-free option, many people think that they’re not going to gain weight by eating it and actually end up having more than they regularly would!
As always, fat-free does not necessarily equal significantly fewer calories.
5. Making your own cookies? Go for lower calorie Ingredients:![]()
If you’re making your own cookies check out our baking tips on reducing calories. There are many ways to reduce calories when you’re making your own cookies. For example you can replace 1 Whole Egg with 2 Egg Whites:
1 Whole Egg= 70 Calories, 2 Egg Whites = 30 Calories.
6. Watch The Quantity:
Always watch the total numbers of cookies you eat. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your favorite cookie as long as you’re in control of how many you enjoy.
