ice-cream.jpgThere are many ways to continue enjoying ice cream while managing your weight. Here are 8 ideas to get started:

1. Add Fruit To Your Ice Cream:
A 1 Cup serving (5 oz) of ice cream is about 400 calories. Replace half the cup with 1 banana or any of your favorite fruits:

1 Cup of ice cream = 400 calories
½ cup of ice cream + 1 banana = 310 Calories
Potential Savings = 90 Calories

2. Try An Alternative To Ice Cream:
There are many alternatives to ice cream that still give you a great tasting cold dessert but with many fewer calories. Two of the best are:

Potential Savings: 120 Calories

1 cup sherbet = 240 Calories.
Potential Savings: 160 Calories

3 The simpler the Flavor, The Fewer The Calories:
Nuts, chocolate chips etc. add a lot of calories to your ice cream. If possible try and skip the toppings and go for a plain flavor.

Low fat usually (but not always) means a significant decrease in calories. From very bland beginnings in the 80’s and early 90’s, the methods and processes to create low-fat ice cream have really improved. Many of them taste great now and are definitely worth a shot.

See if there is a low-fat version of your favorite ice cream available. If you like the taste, this can save you 100-200 Calories Per Cup.

5. Compare All The Options Available In Your Favorite Brand Of Ice Cream:
A quick peek in our list of Calories in Ben and Jerry’s Original Ice Cream tells us that half a cup of Black & Tan is 230 Calories and half a cup of Chunky Monkey is 300 Calories. Make a mental note of it and next time, try the lower calorie option.soft-serve.jpg

6. Try Soft-Serve Light:
A half cup of soft-serve light is just 110 calories. “Light” works extremely well for soft-serve and this is an excellent option for a quick dessert.

7. Buy Cones, Bars & Ice Cream Sandwiches Instead Of The Larger Sizes:
Instead of buying ice cream in large sized tubs, buy a bar, cone or an ice cream sandwich.

This way if you want to eat ice cream, you have a very nice option available at home. But the best part is: To have more ice cream you would have go all the way to a store.

8. If You Love Your Ice Cream, Don’t Expect To Let Go Immediately:
If you have ice cream frequently, use one of the tips above to make a gradual transition to better options. Trying to jump from lots of ice cream to no ice cream at all would be very difficult. Making simple changes would help you manage your weight a lot more effectively.
